Lovers explores the intricate dynamics of modern romantic relationships, where independence and intimacy coexist. Inspired by my own seven-year partnership, this series reflects the evolving dance between selfhood and shared experience, particularly within the context of living abroad. As partners from the same cultural background, our relationship becomes both a refuge and a mirror, balancing the dual roles of close companionship and individual identity.
Each sculptural figure embodies different postures and expressions, symbolising the shifting roles and emotional states within a relationship—vulnerability, desire, and a raw purity that transcends material concerns. The use of nudity highlights this unfiltered connection, revealing both the intimacy and self-reflection inherent in long-term partnerships. Soft velvet cushions contrast with the hardness of the clay figures, symbolising the gentle support and emotional buffer necessary in sustaining closeness while maintaining personal space.
In Lovers, I aim to convey a postmodern perspective on romance, where love is both an anchor and an exploration of self. The series invites viewers to consider how intimacy in contemporary relationships is not just about unity but also about nurturing individual growth within a shared bond.
